I Just Became a Christian — Now What?
If you've recently decided to follow Jesus — welcome. This is the beginning of the most important relationship of your life. You probably have a lot of questions. That's completely normal.
Here's a simple roadmap for your first steps.
What Just Happened?
When you put your trust in Jesus, several things happened:
- You were forgiven. Every sin — past, present, and future — has been paid for by Jesus' death on the cross (Colossians 1:13-14).
- You were adopted. God is now your Father, and you are His child (John 1:12).
- You received the Holy Spirit. God's Spirit now lives inside you, guiding and empowering you (Romans 8:9-11).
- You joined a family. You're part of a global community of believers across history (Ephesians 2:19).
Your First Steps
1. Read the Bible
Start with the Gospel of John. Read one chapter a day. Don't worry about understanding everything — just get to know Jesus.
2. Pray
Prayer is simply talking to God. Thank Him. Ask Him questions. Tell Him what you're struggling with. There are no rules about how long or how formal it needs to be.
3. Find a Church
Look for a church that teaches the Bible, welcomes questions, and practices genuine community. It doesn't have to be perfect — no church is.
4. Get Baptized
Baptism is your public declaration that you've decided to follow Jesus. It's one of the first things Jesus commands for new believers (Matthew 28:19). Talk to a pastor about this.
5. Tell Someone
Share your decision with someone you trust. Faith grows when it's shared.
What to Expect
- You'll have doubts. That's normal. Doubts aren't the opposite of faith — they're part of it.
- You'll still struggle. Becoming a Christian doesn't make you perfect. It means you have a Savior who walks with you through imperfection.
- You'll be changed. Not overnight, but over time. God is in the business of transformation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
A Prayer for the Journey
Jesus, thank You for finding me. I don't fully understand everything yet, but I know I want to follow You. Guide my steps. Surround me with people who will help me grow. And when I stumble, remind me that Your love never changes. Amen.
